More than 2,500 Japanese and other citizens of foreign descent were held at the beginning of WWII, but little evidence of that episode is visible on what is now the present site of the Verdugo Hills Golf Course. Only the oak trees remain.
Her mother died after giving birth to her in 1916. There was a pandemic flu which killed millions around the world. A few years later, when she was 3, her father died and she was sent to Japan to be raised by an aunt. She returned alone to America at the age of 21 and lived on Terminal Island.
The theme was Hallowed Ground. As I thought about the theme, I envisioned the grounds of the camps as a spiritual, haunted and ghost like, and the underground buried with layers of stories to tell.

HG1, names the gulag of concentration camps as if they were ready to be called out in a roll call.

HG2, depicts the inmates lined up at the communal mess hall. Lines to eat, to use the shower, the latrines, movie night, and laundry rooms were a familiar sight, with approximately 8,000 to 20,0000 people incarcerated at each camp. The familiar sight of Tule Lake's iconic Castle Rock is prominent in the background.

HG3, A family looking out between the barbed wire, with their individual identity tags (which are made of acetate), hanging from the fence. They stand on Hallowed Ground, depicted with memories of the lives they left behind and the reasons they find themselves incarcerated at Tule Lake.

HG4, is a protest poster. On it is an original poster of Executive Order 9066, the loyalty survey's questions 27 and 28. If they answered "No...No..." or did not respond at all , they were labeled "disloyals" and "troublemakers".

HG5, Despair: Families were torn apart as discord surrounded them. Pressures mounted from within and without family units, and pitted families and friends against each other.

HG6, Tule Lake had 28 guard towers overlooking the troubled prison. This was more than any of the other camps.

HG7, Survival. This painting depicts three Japanese cultural characteristics that comprised the survival mantra of Nikkei during and after the war: "gaman" (be patient... endure the unendurable), "shikataganai" (nothing can be done), and "kodomo no tame ni" (for the sake of the children).
I will have a one woman show from February to May 26. I have included 3 new paintings in that collection. Series 32 is a 8"x 8" mixed media painting done on Masonite board. It is a painting I did of Heart Mountain, the interpretive center, guard tower and hospital's red brick chimney.
The second painting, Turmoil at Heart Mountain. is an abstract painting, representing the resistance at Heart Mountain that challenged the constitutionality of their imprisonment and demanded freedom as a condition of their conscription into the U.S. Army.
E.O. 9066, Series 31. Woebegone. I looked up "woebegone" in the dictionary and it means exhibiting woe, sorrow, or misery; also dismal, desolate. This little girl, surrounded by luggage and her parents, looks lost, alone and uncertain about her future. The little girl was painted from a photo of my mother when she was sent to Japan after she was orphaned at the age of three.
E.O. 9066, Series 28. Unfinished Business: Euphemisms, came from the realization that government officials used inaccurate terminology to describe the mass removal of Nikkei from the west coast during WWII. The employment of euphemisms is described in Words Can Lie or Clarify by Aiko Yoshinaga Herzig. Download her essay at http://www.nps.gov/tule/.
E.O. 9066, Series 29. Unfinished Business: Hardship and Suffering, depicts the systematic destruction of the Nikkei family unit during the forced removal and incarceration. Families lost most of their personal possessions as they were forced to remote areas, then released after the war to start a new life from scratch. Parents lost control of the family. The long hours of work to rebuild their lives after the war took a toll on male heads of households. My father died at the age of 45, a few years after being released from the concentration camp. Studies have shown that 40% of Nikkei males incarcerated during the war, died before they reached the age of 60.
E.O. 9066, Series 30. Unfinished Business: The Questionnaire, depicts the consequences of how one answered the vaguely worded Questions 28 and 29 of a clumsily administered loyalty questionnaire. Those who replied "no...no," were denounced "disloyals" and "troublemakers" and sent to Tule Lake, the concentration camp in northern California designated as the War Relocation Authority's National Segregation Center. Those sent to Tule Lake were stigmatized, but a growing movement seeks to reject the wartime "disloyal and troublemaker" labels as unfair, and redefines Tulean prisoners as outspoken patriots and heroes who had the courage to stand up for their rights as Americans.
E.O. 9066, Series 27. Pilgrimages, shows participants in the 2014 annual pilgrimage to Manzanar concentration camp near Lone Pine, California, raising banners representing the 10 major concentration camps and other detention sites for Nikkei in World War II. I was honored to represent Poston, where I was incarcerated with my family as a child. Each banner carrier wrote a brief statement for the official program, and mine was: "I feel the weight and burden as I raise the banner of my family and others incarcerated at Poston."
E. O. 9066, Series 25. Naïve Newcomers shows a group of incarcerees dressed in their Sunday best as they arrive at their destination. I'm seated in the second row, at the end on the right. Directly in front of me is my younger sister, Etsuko. We were called "non-aliens." The government employed euphemisms to mask the fact that most of the Nikkei (Japanese American) incarcerees were U.S. citizens. Thus, "non-alien" was used instead of U.S. citizen.
As I painted this, I empathized with the young children, and now have some understanding of how that period has left an indelible scar on my life and defines who I am today.Hatsuko Mary Higuchihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16891059099805321231noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6540040979324281585.post-71577820452590517112014-03-31T10:19:00.000-07:002017-03-31T09:58:11.415-07:00TWO MORE RECENT PAINTINGSLast year when I went to the Henry Fukuhara Paint Out, I took a photo of Manzanar Pleasure Garden. I didn't realize until I had the picture developed that the garden was dappled with beautiful shadows. The only recognizable shapes are the trees in the background. Otherwise, the painting looks like an abstract of beautiful patterned shapes.
Kathleen is an award winning artist and I have always admired her paintings with multiple layers of color and texture. I have been intrigued with her technique, imbued with symbolism and a very personal reflection of her observations. From our conversations, Kathleen and I found that we are alike in many ways in our interest in the art world and our pursuit of art education.

I completed two small pieces in her class. With our textured background, we were to integrate a composition to go with it. My finished piece, Imprisoned, came as a result of the background of tangled gauge print. I imagined myself trapped in that tangled mess with the barracks and guard tower in the background.

A memorial service was held at the Tule Lake Cemetery. As the Pilgrimage participants honored the people who were incarcerated and died at Tule Lake during World War II, I felt their emotions as they viewed what is now a desecrated cemetery, bulldozed over, creating a pit at the site.

I took a photo of an elderly man, carrying the suitcase that he had taken when forcibly removed from his home in 1942. He brought it to the Pilgrimage and as he sat there, I envisioned a younger man, waiting to be taken to some unknown place. Many questions filled the minds of the prisoners, as they wondered nervously, "what lies ahead?"

This painting was created for the 16th Annual Henry Fukuhara Manzanar Paintout. As I looked through the legs of the guard tower, I was intrigued by the shadow of the tall, strong, bold structure looming in front of me. Peeking through the legs, I envisioned the concentration camp-- hundreds of barracks surrounded by barbed wire, parts of it coiled and twisted.
Series 13 is a painting of the notorious Tule Lake stockade. I have participated in two of the Tule Lake Pilgrimages. They have been one of the best organized, drawing over 400 participants, with interesting programs and breakout sessions, starting early in the morning and late into the night. My painting captures the injustice and harshness the incarcerees suffered during their imprisonment. The story of Tule Lake is complex.
Minidoka is a painting of how I remembered the site after my participation in the 2010 Pilgrimage. The foreground shows railroad ties, behind that, the sentry post, then the rock garden, barracks and lastly, the canal.
The rock garden at Minidoka is a stolid place with huge rocks placed strategically that poetically projects feelings of solidarity, strength, and peace.
Executive Order 9066, Series 16. Topaz
Mixed media with collage, 14" x 18"

Topaz is a place of special meaning for me. We went to visit it on our way driving home from Minidoka. To our good fortune, when we went to the Topaz visitor center, we met Jane Beckwith, who is guiding Topaz in its struggle to become a historic site. She took us out to the original camp ground, which we would have never found on our own. No barracks, no guard towers, but acres and acres of desolate dry land with remnants of the past strewn all over. My collage shows, symbolically, the nails, rock garden relics, barbed wire, appliance and furniture parts and the cracked, parched soil. As I looked at the landscape, I felt the presence of the dark past in unbearable heat.
"Executive Order 9066, Series 10: Suppression of
At the entry to the Interpretive Center at Manzanar National Historic Site, there is a quote by syndicated columnist Henry McLemore: "Herd 'em up, pack 'em off and give 'em the inside badlands... Personally, I hate the Japanese."

Those words replayed in my head as I pictured Spider Rock in Canyon de Chelly in Arizona. An Indian guide said that long ago, parents told their children that, if you are bad, you will be sent to the top of that rock. So, I painted Spider Rock and placed the concentration camps for Japanese Americans on top, replete wth guard towers, barracks, and barbed wire. I wrote McLemore's quote on the left, and on the right side, I included part of Executive Order 9066.

I thought I had finished the painting until I read the L.A. Times on May 25, 2011. On the front page, it said that the wartime U.S. Solicitor General had suppressed the fact that U.S. Intelligence services had determined that we were not a security threat, which in turn meant it was not necessary to imprison Japanese Americans in concentration camps. I was outraged, and I went back to my painting and wrote "Suppression of Evidence" and the summary of the Times articles and my reaction. That finally completed my painting.
"Executive Order 9066, Series 8" was recognized in the 30th Annual International Exhibition of the San Diego Watercolor Society in 2010. The mixed media work depicts one of the favorite pastimes of Japanese American children who were incarcerated at concentration camps across the United States during WWII. Marbles and other portable games such as jacks were among the only toys that young prisoners were able to carry to the camps.Hatsuko Mary Higuchihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16891059099805321231noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6540040979324281585.post-41285056047901448882011-07-03T14:22:00.000-07:002017-03-31T09:58:11.295-07:00E Pluribus Unum

Hatsuko Mary Higuchi was born in Los Angeles in 1939. On February 19, 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt issued Executive Order 9066, which authorized the mass removal and incarceration of “all persons of Japanese ancestry” on the West Coast. Mary’s family was imprisoned in the U.S. War Relocation Authority’s Colorado River concentration camp at Poston, Arizona, 1942-1945. Her father died in 1951, after purchasing a 10-acre farm, leaving her mother to raise four small children and work the land.

Mary earned a teaching credential from UCLA and a MA from Pepperdine University. She taught as an elementary school master teacher from 1962 until retirement in 2003.

<div style="font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal; font: 12px/normal "Times New Roman"; margin: 0px;">
Always interested in the arts, she took evening classes at UCLA and California State University Long Beach in weaving, craft design, silver-smithing, black-smithing, and interior design. A turning point in her life occurred in 1989 when she met Henry Fukuhara. It was through Henry’s mentoring and encouragement that Mary’s painting career was launched. In 1998, Mary was among the founding group of plein air artists who joined Henry’s annual Manzanar Paint Outs.

Mary Higuchi paints a variety of themes such as landscapes, figures, and abstracts. She uses watercolor, acrylic, mixed media, collage, and calligraphy. Her EO 9066 paintings depict faces with anonymous features or none at all, symbolizing the mass anonymity to which over 110,000 Americans of Japanese ancestry were reduced–denied due process and judged guilty solely by reason of their race. Mary Higuchi’s haunting portraits are a warning that what happened to Japanese Americans is a precedent for similar actions against other groups, unless we remember the lessons of the past.
